Draft a SWMS

Builders want a SWMS before you start on site. Writing a new one for every job takes a long time.

Steps

  1. 1

First check: in NSW you need a SWMS for 'high risk construction work' (for example, a risk of falling more than 2 m, work near live electrical services, or powered mobile plant). Read the SafeWork NSW guide.

  2. 2

Download the SafeWork NSW SWMS template.

  3. 3

Write the content with this prompt:

    Prompt to copy
Help me draft a SWMS for this install, to be pasted into the SafeWork NSW template. Site: <type, levels, access>. Tasks: <e.g. carry in and install overhead cabinets on level 2, scribing, power tools, working from a platform ladder near an open void>. For each task step list: hazards, risk, control measures (hierarchy of controls), who is responsible. Flag which tasks may be high risk construction work under the NSW WHS Regulation. Use plain language a site worker understands.
  4. 4

Walk around the site, or look at photos, with the install team. Change the controls to what you will really do.

  5. 5

The supervisor checks and signs it. Workers sign it. Keep it on site. Review it if the site changes.
